Is Facebook giving you any worth(Profit)?, No? but Zurker will!!

Facebook continues to be the dominant social network globally. It is now a colossal corporation worth $82 billion (Rs. 410000 Cr, no less!), offices in 15 countries, and more than 2,000 employees. This year there have been two major challenges to Facebook, the first being Google+ introduced on June 28, 2011, and now Zurker. While many observers noted similarities between Google+ and Facebook as well as Google+ and Twitter, Zurker is quite unique. Zurk Means “I appreciate the fact that you have shared the information”.

The first interesting thing about upstart Zurker is that it is being rolled out by country, and Zurker India is one of the first countries to be available (the others are the US, the UK, and the Philippines). However, members in Zurker India can still connect with members in Zurker US and vice versa.

The other, perhaps more important, difference is that “Zurker is owned by the members who are using it“. The founders who prefer to refer to themselves as custodians of this project, have designed the system so that members can own a type of equity in this project, called “V-shares.” The custodians are quick to point out that V-shares are not real shares, for legal reasons, but can and will become real shares when Zurker is incorporated.

Every member has a chance to own part of the network, so it’s almost like being best friends with the founders. Ironically, when you sign up with MySpace, the founder of that network Tom Anderson automatically becomes “friends” with every new member, but of course MySpace remained in the ownership of Tom and Chris DeWolf until they sold it to News Corporation for $580 million (Rs. 2900 Cr) in 2005. Zurker is giving out 10 lakh V-shares on a first-come, first-served basis. New members can earn V-shares by bringing friends to Zurker. This not only helps Zurker grow making their equity more valuable, but it also means the new members have plenty of social networking opportunities on the brand-new network. It’s still in alpha testing and by the admission of the founders, “riddled with bugs and incomplete”. But if you are brave enough you can be one of the first users to sign up from India during alpha testing. It’s by invitation only so here is the invitation link from my account.

Registration is open by invitation only!!

How to use your android phone to control computers remotely

Are you tired of providing on-site tech support for your friends and family? Providing support remotely is an easy way to help them while maintaining your sanity. If you don't have a computer nearby, but have your Android phone, you can still help. Here's how:

Computer setup

Step 1:
On the computer you want to remote control, download "TeamViewer QuickSupport" from TeamViewer. The downloaded file is named TeamViewerQS_en.exe. The program is self-contained so it does not need to be installed.

Step 2:
Double-click on the TeamViewerQS_en.exe file to launch TeamViewer on the computer you want to control.

Step 3:
At the main screen, the numeric ID of that system is listed and a numeric password for that session. Make a note of the ID and password as you'll need that information later.

Step 4:
If you're setting this up on someone else's computer, you may want to create a shortcut for them or place the file on their desktop so they can find it more easily when they need your help. Once you've connected to the computer, a small window with a session list will pop up in the lower right-hand corner.
TeamViewer session list

Android setup

Step 1:
On your Android phone, install TeamViewer from the Android Market and launch it. In the first box, enter the ID of the "partner" computer. In the second box, enter the password and tap the "Connect to partner" button.

Step 2:
Once connected, you'll see gesture control instructions.

Step 3:
Close the instruction screen to see the desktop of the remote computer.
TeamViewer connected

You've got control! Now you can help your in-law's figure out how to use Netflix streaming or add an RSS feed to Google Reader. You can help someone with just about anything he or she might need help with, without having to physically be there. You can use the mouse, type, print, and even reboot the remote computer.

The Android version of TeamViewer does have a few limitations, compared with the computer version. The Android version does not support local audio, text chat , video chat, or file transfers.

Gmail: How To Secure your Gmail account

Gmail
Google recently learned a lesson in security when it found that hundreds of user e-mail accounts, including ones belonging to U.S. and Chinese government officials, had been hacked.

Hackers are professionals in their field who prey on unknowing (and sometimes even tech-savvy) individuals. With the rise in hacks recently, it's time to check to see if your Gmail account is secure.

Below you'll find five best practices for securing your Gmail account. Each one is free, built into Gmail, and easily configured.

1: Enable two-step verification

All that hackers need to access your Google account (including YouTube, Gmail, and Blogger) is your password, which they can acquire with a phishing scam or when you accidentally expose your password. To address this issue, Google now offers two-step verification, in which Google will send you an SMS with a special code that you enter as the second part of the log-in process.

2: Be a password strategist

When choosing a password, there are two things you should be doing. First, choose a password that is unique to your Gmail account--don't use it for any other service. Once you've chosen a password, head to Password Meter to check its strength.

3: Enable HTTPS security

If you access Gmail over an unsecured network--as at a cafe, library, or shop--you instantly become vulnerable to hackers. Make sure you're browsing public Wi-Fi safely, and that you're using Gmail with HTTPS security. To enable HTTPS, sign in to Gmail and go to Mail settings (upper right) > General. Set "Browser Connection" to "Always use HTTPS."

4: Update your backups

Sign in to Gmail and head to Account settings (upper right) > Accounts and Import > Change password recovery options. Here, you can add an e-mail address, a phone number, and a security question you can use to recover your account if a hacker changes your password.

5: Check account activity

It could be that a hacker (or an ex-girlfriend) is accessing your account without your knowledge. To check, sign in to your Gmail account and go to the bottom of the page. You'll see a line that says "Last account activity..." At the end of this line, click "Details" and you'll see when, how, and where your account is being used. If you suspect any unkosher activity, immediately change your password and security questions, and enable two-step verification.

How To Password-protect your folders with free docLock

docLock
If you share your PC with friends, family members, co-workers, the occasional IT guy, etc., there may be files and folders you want to keep private. You know, financial data, company secrets, certain sensitive video files--that kind of thing. (Hey, I'm not here to judge.)

Out of the box, Windows doesn't give you the tools you need to password-protect files and folders. For that, you'll need a third-party utility. Most of them cost anywhere from $30-50, but if you're quick with your clicking finger, you can score one absolutely free.

Today only, Giveaway of the Day is giving away docLock for Windows. It regularly sells for $49.95 (though it's currently on sale for $29.95 from developer Large Software).

docLock provides military-grade security for any files and folders you want to protect. You can assign your own password or let the software generate one for you. And locking/unlocking is as simple as dragging and dropping to the docLock window or right-clicking the item and choosing docLock from the context menu.

If you need to share a protected file/folder with someone or take it with you, docLock gives you the option of making it portable--meaning it can be unlocked just by supplying the password (i.e. docLock itself doesn't need to be present).

Like all Giveaway of the Day deals, this one expires at midnight. To take advantage of it, you must download and install the program today. (And, yes, if you reformat your hard drive or migrate to another PC down the road, you'll lose access to the software. It's really intended to be a kind of extended trial.)

Bonus deal: Also today only, you can score a TrendNet TPL-303E2K Powerline Adapter Kit for $49.99 shipped. It uses your existing electrical wires to establish a high-speed Ethernet connection between your router and a PC, game console, Blu-ray player, or whatever. These kits normally sell for at least $100.

How to Keep Malware Off Your Android Phone

angry_droid-5149854.jpg
Although some of these apps might look suspicious, others bearing names such as "Quick Notes" or "Chess" seem innocent enough, and you might not think twice about downloading them.

Tips for a Malware-Free Smartphone

Following are five quick tips to help you keep your Android handset free of malware.
  1. Always research the publisher of the app. What other apps does it offer? Do any of them look a bit shady? If so, you should probably stay away.
  2. Read online reviews. Android Market reviews may not always be truthful. Check around to see what reputable Websites are saying about the app before you hit the download button.
  3. Always check app permissions. Whenever you download or update an app, you get a list of permissions for it. An alarm clock app, for instance, probably shouldn't need to look through your contacts. The general rule of thumb: If an app is asking for more than what it needs to do its job, you should skip it.
  4. Avoid directly installing Android Package files (APKs). When Angry Birds first came to Android, you could get it only through a third party. This is called "sideloading," or installing apps using an .APK file. Although Angry Birds wasn't malware, in general it is highly advisable not to download and install .APK files that you randomly come across. Most of the time you won't know what the file contains until you install it--and by then it's too late.
  5. Put a malware and antivirus scanner on your phone. Although many people still think that antivirus scanners on phones are useless, maybe outbreaks such as this one will change minds. Several different big-name security companies already offer mobile-security options, many of them free. I myself had downloaded "Spider Man," which is on a bad-apps list. My Lookout software identified it as a Trojan horse.

Lookout Mobile Security, which provides security software for mobile phones, posted on its blog a list of 56 Android applications that have been infected with DroidDream, a new type of Android malware that roots your phone and gains access to as much personal information as it can. The apps also can open a backdoor, allowing more executable code to download to your phone without your being aware of it.

A few of these apps have already been downloaded by at least 50,000 users, making this one of the most widespread cases of Android malware to date. Although the apps in question have been pulled from the Android Market, Google is investigating them and has not yet moved to wipe them remotely from users' phones.

Lookout has issued an update to its mobile security software. If you have downloaded any of these apps, the company advises that you run its malware scanner and e-mail the Lookout support center. Mashable (also posted a list of infected apps complied by Myournet) suggests returning your phone to your carrier, as your data and security may be compromised.

With more and more malware emerging for the Android platform every day, users would do well to be careful and pay strict attention to what happens on their phones. You have to remember that smartphones are essentially computers--and all computers are vulnerable to attack by malicious software.

Gmail Hacks: Tips and Tricks You May Not Know

Google Mail is without doubt one of the most popular online email services. What makes it so interesting is not only the functionality that it provides out of the box but also its extensibility. The following article contains five Gmail tips and tricks that you may not know about:

Trick 1: Select multiple messages

Tired of clicking individual messages but don't want to select all of them? Select the first message in the set, hold the shift key, then select the last message of the set.

Trick 2: Bypass the blank message prompt

Do you send messages where the subject is the entire message? Then you're familiar with the prompt asking you if you're sure you want to send the message without text in the body. To bypass the prompt, type "EOM" or "(EOM)" at the end of the subject to tell Gmail that it's the end of message.

Trick 3: Use address aliases

Gmail doesn't offer traditional e-mail aliases, but you can add a "+" to the end of your username to create one. For example, messages sent to username+alias@gmail.com is sent to username@gmail.com. This can be useful for setting up filters or figuring out who's selling your e-mail address to spammers.

Trick 4: Dots or no dots, it's your username

Did you know that Gmail doesn't recognize dots as characters within a username? That means that if your e-mail address is username@gmail.com, then user.name@gmail.com and u.s.e.r.n.a.m.e@gmail.com are also yours.

Trick 5: Send & Archive at once

If you send messages and immediately archive the conversation, you can save yourself a step by adding a Send & Archive button. Go to the Labs section of your Mail Settings and enable the Send & Archive button.

How to Install Windows 8 via USB Drive

windows8

Microsoft has just released a developer preview of its new operating system Windows 8. Users can now download the preview and install on their system to see how its works. But there is just one problem and that is you can't update an existing version of windows, it requires a clean installation.

It is a straight forward process when installing it with a CD/DVD Drive but if you're like me that has a 10inch notebook which doesn't come with a DVD drive then the only solution is to install via a USB stick or drive.

Installing Windows 8 from a USB drive is not that friendly because it requires more preparation that just burning an ISO image to disk and putting that ISO into the DVD drive of the computer.

You will need at least four Gigabytes free space of USB drive, which you have to first format with the FAT32 file system. This is done by connecting the USB drive to the company, right click its drive letter and select Format from the options. The Format windows pops up where you need to make sure that FAT32 is the selected file system. Everything else can be left as they are.

installing-windows-8

After the formatting is finished, you will need access to the Windows 8 ISO or DVD. The developer preview is only provided as an ISO image. Check out Windows 8 Download for instructions or download the developer preview right here.

The easiest way to copy Windows 8 to an USB drive and make that drive bootable at the same time is to use Microsoft’s Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool. While designed specifically for Windows 7, it appears to work just fine to create a bootable Windows 8 USB key as well.

installing-windows-8

Just select the Windows 8 ISO when asked to pick an ISO image from the computer. Then select to copy the contents to an USB drive. The program will copy all files to the drive and make that drive bootable at the same time. You can download the Microsoft tool from here.

installing-windows-8

Install Windows 8

You plug in your USB key into the computer you want to install Windows 8 on. You need to tell the computer on first start to boot from USB and not from hard drive or another location. This is done in the Bios. You usually enter the Bios with F1, F1, Delete, Esc or another key that is highlighted on the screen on Post. Press that key and look for an entry that says Boot or Boot order and make sure that USB has the highest priority on the system. You can easily repeat the steps if the computer is not booting from USB.

The computer should pick up the installation files on the USB drive automatically and installation should commence.

Windows 8 has the following system requirements:

  • 1 Gigahertz or faster 32-bit or 64-bit processor
  • 1 Gigabyte of RAM for 32-bit, 2 Gigabytes of RAM for 64-bit minimum
  • 16 Gigabyte hard drive for 32-bit systems, 20 Gigabyte for 64-bit systems
  • Direct X 9 graphics card
Note: It is also possible to install Windows 8 by mounting the ISO image directly on another Windows system. The instructions have been posted on Reddit.

If you want to install the Windows Developer Preview, but have no blank DVDs or usable thumb drives, fear not. It’s fairly simple. This assumes you are installing the preview on a computer already running Windows, of course.

  • Download the ISO file from Microsoft.
  • Mount the ISO using Daemon Tools, Clone Drive, or similar.
  • This is important. Do not use the autorun installer. The autorun installer only allows you to upgrade your existing Windows installation and will not allow you to install to a separate hard drive or partition.
  • Navigate to the virtual install disc and go to the folder called “sources”.
  • Run setup.exe and proceed as if installing Windows Vista or 7.
